I'm very interested in this project as a way to use my 3D printer to make models I make in the game.īelieve me, I was trying, being antisocial at Thanksgiving while hacking out a working version. Those cost more than a nice car and the material is pricey too. Shapeways uses Zcorp color printers that are more like inkjet printers and print color bonding solution on a fine powder layer by layer to make up an object. It uses a printing technology called Fused Deposition Modelling, basically layers a thin noodle of melted plastic very tightly to create solid objects, generally in only one color plastic. The plastic is about $20/pound, which creating hollow object you can use for a lot of little plastic models. The software ReplicatorG take care of a lot of the processing of the 3D file and translates it to code for the machine. You do have to learn a little about the process, specifically getting the plastic extruder temp and speed right so you don't have blobbed pieces. I have a Makerbot Cupcake 3D printer, it cost me about $800 for the kit and really didn't take that long to assemble.
